Meet Godwin

Godwin Owinje | International Basketball Scout • Talent Developer • Co-Founder, Giants of Africa

Current Role:

CEO & President of Basketball Operations Pro-Edge Sports

Godwin Owinje is an internationally respected basketball executive, talent scout, and co-founder of the globally renowned Giants of Africa initiative. Born and raised in Nigeria, Godwin has spent more than two decades shaping how African talent connects with the global basketball ecosystem, bridging the gap between local potential and international opportunity.

Godwin plays a pivotal role in the team’s global player-evaluation strategy, with a strong focus on identifying and nurturing talent across the African continent. His work reflects a deep belief that Africa is no longer on the periphery of basketball’s story, it is central to its next era.

Godwin’s basketball journey began on the court. After a standout playing career that took him from Nigeria to Georgetown University (USA) where he played from 1995-1997. He transitioned seamlessly into scouting and player development.

The NBA Hall of Fame legend Allen Iverson and Godwin Owinje shared a meaningful bond during the 1995–1996 basketball season at Georgetown University, where they were teammates under legendary coach John Thompson. The environment at Georgetown demanded discipline, toughness, and accountability, and both players were shaped by that culture. Iverson was the explosive lead guard known for his speed and scoring ability, while Owinje brought size, strength, and interior presence. Their different skill sets made them complementary pieces on the court, helping Georgetown remain a powerful contender in the Big East during a highly competitive era.

The season they shared was filled with intensity and mutual growth. Iverson, who was still refining his leadership style, relied on the trust and support of teammates like Owinje. In turn, Owinje benefited from playing alongside a generational talent who drew constant defensive pressure, creating opportunities inside. The chemistry within that roster reflected more than talent; it was built on shared challenges, long practices, and the guidance of a coaching staff that pushed them to compete at the highest level.

Beyond the hardwood, the relationship between Iverson and Owinje represented the kind of brotherhood common in college basketball, where players come from different backgrounds yet build bonds through shared goals. Georgetown’s culture emphasized family, and both players carried that forward in their careers and personal lives. Their time as teammates remains part of a storied chapter in Georgetown basketball history, one defined by resilience, respect, and the unforgettable experience of competing together on a national stage.

Over the years, he has held scouting and advisory positions with several NBA organizations—including the Detroit Pistons, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, Washington Wizards, Charlotte Bobcats, and Philadelphia 76ers—where his deep understanding of player growth, transcontinental talent pathways, and cultural context has made him a trusted voice in front offices.

In 2003, Godwin co-founded Giants of Africa alongside Masai Ujiri, President of the Toronto Raptors. What began as a grassroots basketball camp has grown into a continental movement that has reached tens of thousands of young men and women across more than 17 African countries—using sport as a tool to educate, inspire, and empower the next generation of African leaders.

Through his work with the Brooklyn Nets and Giants of Africa, Godwin continues to advocate for a more inclusive and global game, one that recognizes and invests in African talent not as an exception, but as a foundation.

“Gone are the days when African players were seen as too raw or mechanical,” he often says. “The continent has come a long way, its players are ready, refined, and resilient.”

His philosophy centers on building systems, not just stars, focusing on infrastructure, mentorship, and opportunity. He believes in connecting continents through basketball, from D.C. to Dakar, nurturing a transatlantic bridge of shared passion, purpose, and progress.

Godwin embodies a rare combination of technical expertise, cultural fluency, and purpose-driven leadership. Whether mentoring a young player in Africa or evaluating prospects in Europe, he brings the same conviction: that basketball is more than a sport, it’s a global language of opportunity.
